Public procurement of sociobioeconomy food at scale

Support: Google.org

In partnership with the federal government, we work to expand public procurement access for producers in the Amazon’s sociobioeconomy—strengthening supply chains such as açaí, Brazil nuts, babassu, and cupuaçu. By supporting the Contrata+Brasil platform (Ministry of Innovation Management in Public Services — MGI) and the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Services (MDIC)’s development agenda, we aim to make procurement more efficient and accessible, boosting sustainable local development.

The initiative has the potential to generate approximately R$35 million per year in public procurement in the region, contributing to the preservation of 38,000 hectares and the reduction of GHG emissions.

The project is funded by Google.org, which has provided over R$5 million in support of the structuring of digital public markets focused on positive climate and economic impact in the Amazon.

Low Carbon Public Procurement

Support: Instituto Clima e Sociedade (iCS)

Partnering with Minas Gerais State’s Secretariat of Planning and Management (SEPLAG), we integrate sustainability and carbon reduction criteria into the state's public procurement. Our strategies guide the Annual Procurement Plan, fostering low-climate-impact, environmentally efficient purchases. This work is made possible by a R$1.5 million grant from the Climate and Society Institute (iCS), and aims to generate an effective and lasting reduction in carbon-equivalent emissions associated with government procurement.
